A girl uses a family gift to solve her problems

Written by Shawn Miller

Shayla is a touching and magical coming-of-age story that follows the life of an 13-year-old African American girl, Shayla Cambray, as she navigates the trials and tribulations of high school. Surrounded by a cast of characters that includes her loving and wise grandfather, Floyd Hardy (Papa), and the ever-present clique of bullies led by Madison Gold, Shayla's journey is one of self-discovery, empowerment, and a deeper understanding of her family's unique heritage.

As Shayla faces daily challenges in school, she learns valuable life lessons from her grandfather and uncovers the mysterious power hidden within a family heirloom. This power changes not only her life but also the lives of those around her. Shayla's story reminds us of the strength within us, the importance of standing up for oneself, and the transformative power of embracing one's true identity.
